Fécamp is an ancient fishing port with some boats still based there bringing in fresh fish, scallops and crab. It is also the home of the Bénédictine liqueur; at the Palais de Bénédictine Museum you can touch and smell the many ingredients that go into the liqueur.

As well as a marina and a long sea-front promenade in front of the pebble beach, there are several small art galleries, museums, ancient buildings and churches, including the impressive church of the Abbey de Saint-Trinite, where often concerts are performed.

Local facilities include a public swimming pool, cinema, casino, riding stables, golf, tennis, and of course there are plenty of restaurants in the town and surrounding locality.

There are several markets in the area, such as in Goderville, Valmont and Yvetot, as well as in Fecamp, all on different days. They are a wonderful opportunity to practice your French and buy some of the local produce, such as homemade cheeses and local charcuterie! You can also discover cider farms nearby, which produce sparkling cider and sometimes Calvados.

Situated in the Haute-Falaises countryside of the Seine-Maritime region, the coast line has spectacular cliffs intersected by little beaches with rock pools. Etretat is a picturesque small seaside town only a few miles away.

The countryside around Bariville is typical of the area, a mixture of open farmland dropping down into small wooded valleys, with many villages and hamlets.

There are a few chateaus in the region, such as at Sassetot and Cany-Barville, and interesting gardens, such as those designed by Gertrude Jekyll at Varengeville-sur-Mer, as well as numerous old churches.

A little further afield is the National Forest Park of Brotonne, and the historic city of Rouen with its cathedral and old city centre. Across the spectacular Pont du Normandie, over the river Seine, is picturesque Honfleur, and the long sandy beaches of Trouville and Deauville.

Information about historic and scenic motoring, walking and cycle routes, some of which take you through beautiful countryside, is available from the tourist office in Fécamp. They can also tell you about other local events, such as exhibitions, concerts, fêtes and son-et-lumières.
